This internship is within the Public Finance and Inequality (PFI) team of Oxfam Novib. The main objective of the internship is to provide communications, research and project related support to our influencing and capacity strengthening work both worldwide (mainly Africa and Asia) and in the Netherlands.
The PFI team works within the context of Human Economy thinking. Extreme inequality and climate change, two of the biggest challenges of our times, are not just natural phenomena, they are caused by the way we organize our economy. The current economic model is hurting us all, but it is the poorest people who suffer most. If governments and private sector put wellbeing and sustainability before growth and profit, they would make radically different policy choices, including on taxation and public spending. Oxfam Novib’s Human Economy agenda strives for an economy that works for everyone, not just the privileged few; an economy that puts the wellbeing of people and planet before growth and profit.
The Public Finance and Inequality team is dedicated to supporting colleagues and partners in 10+ countries to build powerful influencing to end extreme inequality, through fairer taxation and more and better spending for health and education. We also want to #endtaxhavens through lobbying the Netherlands and other European governments. One of the tools we use is the Fair Tax Monitor; this is an evidence-based, comprehensive advocacy tool to compare the fairness of tax systems of different countries to #maketaxfair.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Being involved in the overall project management cycle, including drafting input for Fundraising, Monitoring and Evaluation (outcome harvesting) and Reporting.
- Providing input to Public Finance and Inequality work of colleagues and partners, e.g. in Ghana, Mozambique and Nigeria (focusing on research and advocacy on fair taxation and public spending).
- Contribute to ongoing research by the team in The Hague on the role of the Netherlands, EU or global bodies in Fair Taxation, Climate Financing etc.
- Present research findings internally and externally through presentations, articles and or blogs.
- Support the communication with short stories for the website, communication in the wider Oxfam Confederation and towards donors.
- Provide content to our project website www.maketaxfair.net and social media.
- Publish articles on the project website using Word Press.
- Support development of FAIR and FTM materials.
Your profile
- Currently a Masters’ degree student in a relevant study.
- A (university) background in economics, tax law, finance, international development, international relations, or related area.
- An interest in the link between inequality and fiscal issues.
- Good communication skills in English, verbal and written, can present well in English.
- A good understanding of organizational and public communication processes.
- Highly motivated, result-oriented and are a both a team player and able to work independently.
- Willing to learn and share your knowledge with others.
- A good understanding of organizational and public communication processes.
- Good communication skills in French are an asset.
Our offer
An intern in Oxfam Novib is offered an internship contract for the duration of the internship based on 36 hours work week, pro-rated in case of less hours, and a monthly allowance. This allowance is €350,- per month, calculated pro rata. If the intern does not have a student OV card, a reimbursement of commuting costs will be offered. Oxfam Novib works on hybrid basis – partly from office, partly from home.
During the internship, the intern is supervised, daily/weekly by a designated colleague.
