Stichting NICC: “Seeing Development Through Generations: Gender, Photography & Dialogue”

-

On February 21, Stichting NICC is hosting the webinar Seeing Development Through Generations: Gender, Photography & Dialogue, to stimulate intergenerational discussions on development cooperation. First, the new Gender Glossary will be presented, followed by a discussion about photography in development cooperation. Do different generations view the same photos differently? And why is it necessary to continuously review terms such as depicted in a Gender Glossary? This is an interactive event, so we encourage everyone to participate!

Building on our previous webinar in November 2024, where Robin Hids explored the evolving language of development cooperation, we now turn our attention to the importance of (gender)terminology and how glossaries and terminologies are always evolving, never a finished project. We will present our updated Gender Glossary and reflect on the dynamics that can determine which terms or descriptions might be included or excluded from key policy documents, resolutions, and smaller documents, such as glossaries.

In presenting our updates and the discussions that led to these modifications, we aim to provide insights on how to further make your development and international cooperation projects, yet likewise perceptions of the world, more (gender) inclusive. Following this, we invite you to participate in an interactive discussion that focsues on the role of photography in development work. We will present images taken by members of Stichting NICC during their (field)work, encouraging you to reflect on what these photographs evoke. What emotions or associations arise for you when you view them? How might your perspective differ from others in the webinar?

Our presenters that will introduce the topic and consequently will moderate the discussion and interaction are Iris Dijkstra & Joosje Seeling.

Iris Dijkstra is a recent Msc graduate in Conflict Resolution and Governance at UvA and within Stichting NICC works on the general gender timeline as well as on communication strategies. Iris’ master thesis research explored the enactment of decolonial feminism by people from Abya Yala in het Netherlands, deepening their interest in gender rights from a decolonial and intersectional feminist perspective.

Joosje Seeling is a master student at Leiden University of the master ‘History: Cities, Migration and Global Interdependence’. At Stichting NICC Joosje works on the gender timeline and does research on how photography is experienced by different generations.
