Bid Manager
(36 hours, based in The Hague)

‘Champions League’ Bid Management, is how you can describe the level of bid management in the current international development sector. Competition is skilled, experienced and there is a lot of it. There are hundreds of opportunities per year, but you make the difference with your knowledge about institutional donor needs and priorities and your ability to connect these to what Cordaid has to offer. We try to work as efficient as possible and only respond to opportunities where we have a serious chance of winning. The challenge is yours to increase our winning chances, and to ensure that funding opportunities lead to good contracts for Cordaid.

You will not be on your own, but you will be part of the Institutional Funding and Donor Relations department, the heart of all Cordaid’s institutional funding efforts. The department, together with the country offices, is tasked by realising Cordaid’s income ambitions through high quality bid management and relationship management that leads to warm opportunities for Cordaid.

Job summary

What you do

As a bid manager you lead complex institutional donor grant- and/or tender procedures (500K – 10+ million). Main donors of Cordaid are EU, UN, bilateral donors, etc.  It will be your responsibility to make sure that all required information is available as input for the proposal and budget. Through your expert coordination of the entire process, you arrive together with the core team, at a bid strategy that fully aligns (both qualitatively and quantitatively) with the donor needs and requirements. You are responsible for the final review of the complete proposal before it is submitted, ensuring the bid is competitive, compliant and compelling to donors.  You do this by:

  • Strict management for each opportunity, in line with donor compliance and regulations and internal requirements
  • Functionally lead a multidisciplinary bid team, mostly consisting of a writer, a content and context expert, a project controller, a planning, monitoring and evaluation expert, and a donor relation manager
  • Selecting relevant partners to cooperate with, pro-actively engage with them to ensure their necessary input, and effectively negotiate the budget division to ensure the donor guidelines and Cordaid’s financial standards are met as well as a fair share for the partners.
  • Contract negotiations to ensure a financially viable contract, when a bid is awarded, including a sound risk analysis and mitigation strategy
  • Developing and maintaining good relationships with relevant donors; analyse trends and priorities of these donors; translating them into viable opportunities for Cordaid.
  • Supporting and coaching colleagues in the field who take up the role of bid manager
job requirements

Who you are

  • You have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social sciences, international development, business administration, communications or equivalent.
  • 5-10 years of experience in a similar role with extensive knowledge of bid management processes.
  • You have strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to persuade and connect with others
  • You have a track record with institutional and/or humanitarian donors and foundations in the international development sector
  • You have experience with calls for proposals of various sizes and know how to achieve successful awards by choosing the right strategy.
  • You easily take on overall responsibility in a bid process, and with your structured approach, you set clear directions.
  • You know how to effectively review proposals and budgets and are not afraid to be critical and are a master in giving constructive feedback.
  • You are fluent in English and preferably also in French, Dutch and Arabic is a pre;
  • You recognize yourself in Cordaid’s mission and values.
