Open Air Cinema 2019: Heartbound

Heartbound tells the story of lonely Danish men who marry Thai women. A moving and thoughtfully made documentary about immigration, intercultural marriage and the difference between rich and poor, and about homesickness, family ties, expectations and disappointments.

Around 900 Thai women are married to Danes in northern Jutland. This remarkable trend started 25 years ago when Sommai, a former Thai prostitute, married Niels from Jutland. Sommai has been paring lonely Jute men with poor Thai women from her homeland ever since.

The award-winning director Janus Metz (Armadillo,Borg McEnroe) and his wife, the anthropologist Sine Plambech, followed four of these Thai-Danish couples for ten years. The result is an intimate and moving chronicle about love and romance, dreams and setbacks, life and death.

The open-air film starts after sundown, which is around 21:30. If it’s raining, the film will be screened indoors in the Genève hall. Drinks and snacks will be available on our terrace before the film starts.
