Master / Bachelor Course
The political economy of petro-states: Venezuela in a comparative context
Prof. Javier Corrales (Amherst College)
Friday 3 May (ONLY 1st class!) – Tuesday 2 July 2013
This course examines the notion of the “resource curse”, the neo-structuralist hypothesis that dependence on natural resource exports, in this case oil, is detrimental for development. Resource export dependence is said to distort economic incentives (away from diversification) and politics (by facilitating corruption, raising the stakes of power-holding, easing checks on the power of the state, and weakening society’s capacity to hold the state accountable).
