Are you a strategic thinker with a passion for communicating strong and impactful messages using innovative methods? Would you like to work for an organisation focused on challenging corporate power and holding corporations accountable for harmful impacts on people and the environment? Join SOMO as our new Communications Officer!

About SOMO

SOMO investigates multinationals. Independent, factual, critical, and with a clear goal: a fair and sustainable world where the well-being of people and the planet outweighs corporate profits and interests.

With a strong commitment to anti-racism and decolonisation, we conduct action-oriented research to expose the impact and unprecedented power of multinationals and promote fundamental changes in our economic system to stop and reverse the harm done by multinationals. Cooperating with hundreds of organisations around the world, we ensure that our information arrives where it has the most impact: communities, courtrooms, civil society organisations, media, and policymakers.

In recent years, SOMO has grown to a non-profit organisation with about 40 employees. The majority of the staff work from our Amsterdam office and collaborate with partners across the world. The work culture at SOMO can be described as open, inclusive, and collaborative where employees are passionate and engaged. We are ambitious and critical, united by a shared drive to contribute to a fair and just world.

Structure

SOMO is organised in several expertise teams: Research programmes, Advocacy and Networks, Communications, Operations, and Management. We also host and participate in several national and international civil society networks like the OECD Watch and MVO Platform.

Our Communications team is small and mighty and plays a crucial role in ensuring SOMO’s work reaches the right audiences and drives impact. The team includes a Senior Communications Officer and a Digital Communications Specialist and is led by the Head of Communications.

About the function

As a Communications Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring SOMO’s work is effectively communicated and widely disseminated to raise awareness among key audiences. You will develop and implement communication strategies that amplify our research and advocacy efforts, ensuring our messaging aligns with our strategy and commitment to intersectional justice, decolonisation, and anti-racism.

Main responsibilities

Together with the support of the Communications team and in collaboration with the project teams, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing targeted communication strategies to amplify SOMO’s research, advocacy goals, and project objectives.
  • Creating compelling content such as press releases, op-eds, newsletters, blog posts, social media updates, videos, and other materials, ensuring alignment with SOMO’s branding and messaging.
  • Managing and updating SOMO’s website, applying basic SEO, and ensuring content accuracy and relevance.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging across various platforms and initiatives.
  • Leveraging social media and digital marketing techniques to engage audiences, increase reach, and drive advocacy efforts.
  • Support the communications team in building and maintaining relationships with journalists and media outlets to ensure that the organisation’s work gets coverage in relevant media outlets and handles media inquiries.
  • Monitoring and analysing communication performance, providing insights and recommendations for improvement.
  • Supporting outreach campaigns, events, and stakeholder engagement to strengthen awareness and mobilise support for SOMO’s initiatives.
  • Staying informed on industry trends and emerging communication tools to refine strategies and enhance SOMO’s digital presence.

We encourage you to apply even if you are unsure whether you have experience with every responsibility listed above. If you’re passionate about our mission and believe you can contribute to this role, we’d love to hear from you!

Who are we looking for?

  • You are an all-round communication professional with sufficient relevant experience to excel at this role.
  • Proficiency in creating content for various platforms.
  • You have a smooth and sharp way of writing and communicating in Dutch and English (fluency in both languages is required).

  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • You are proactive, flexible and team-oriented.

What we offer
