Friends of the Earth International is looking for a:

 Technical-Digital Coordinator – EU project

 80 % (30 hours – 4 days per week)

Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) is the world’s largest grassroots environmental federation with more than 70 autonomous member groups around the world.

With our member groups we campaign on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues. We challenge the current model of economic and corporate globalisation and promote solutions that will help to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies.

We focus on four program areas: climate justice and energy, forests and biodiversity, food sovereignty, and economic justice, and two cross-cutting thematic areas: gender justice and environmental human rights defenders. Our vision is of a peaceful and sustainable world based on societies living in harmony with nature.

FoEI is governed by our member groups and our decentralized and democratic structure allows all member groups to participate in strategizing and decision-making. The member groups come together every two years to vote on issues facing the federation and throughout the year thematic working groups composed of member group representatives implement our strategies.

A small International Secretariat (IS) in Amsterdam and a team of global staff supports the activities of the federation and the member groups through fundraising, campaign coordination, trainings, communications, and information management.

FoEI has been awarded an EU grant, “People’s power to drive transformative and sustainable solutions”, with a duration of four years. The project aims to strengthen FoEI member groups and structures to work both independently and collectively to contribute to social and environmental justice in policy-making processes. The project covers 67 countries in 4 regions (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and Europe).

About the position

FoEI is seeking a talented person for the newly created position of Technical/Digital Coordinator (TC). Besides functioning as the day-to-day liaison with our ICT support company, this role will work on an improved set up of the internal digital communication flows in the federation with the aim to increase collaboration at all levels (national, regional, global). This includes establishing a Digital Infrastructure Working Group composed of member group representatives.

The TC will work to analyse and improve our technical infrastructure and its security while also working to increase the number of people in the federation that have the skills to take part in digital collaboration. For the basic technical infrastructure, the TC will liaise with our current ICT company who are responsible for hardware, MS-365 cloud and office applications. For the development of additional tools, we may need to contract additional third parties.

The TC will be part of the Operations Team in the IS and be accountable to the Operations Manager. Strong collaboration with all other teams in the Secretariat will be required, especially with the Membership Development Team. The assessment will also incorporate member groups capacity and needs related to digital tools and spaces and will inform goal setting for the level of usage of digital tools.
  • Implement the digital infrastructure strategy and work plan. This will include upgrades and enhancements to existing systems and tools, the development of a secure internal FoEI Intranet.
  • Strengthen the security of our digital infrastructure and train our federation in how to improve digital security in our everyday work.
  • Training and skill-building activities to enable increased contribution to and use information systems and tools, including the development of a series of training webinars to support ongoing technical capacity development of end-users. Develop and regularly update administrative manuals, orientation and training materials.
  • Promote contribution of digital content/resources and use of collaboration tools by our staff and structures. Apply data analytics to assess the usage and performance of different platforms and tools, further informing the ongoing maintenance and improvement of FoEI’s digital resources and networks.
  • Facilitate ongoing customization and improvements of digital systems through iterative processes with contractors building out the technical infrastructure, and the staff, structures, working/advisory groups and member groups utilizing and contributing to the systems and tools.
